FAQ's about Small Groups

                                                HORIZON HOME

How often do small groups meet?
Groups will decide what works best . . . weekly or bi-weekly. Schedules are complex, but with determination, we believe we will find time.

When and where?
There are seven days in the week and our groups decide what works best for them.  Some groups meet at the church and in others in homes.Childcare can be provided at the church for those who find Sunday or Wednesday evenings the best time to gather.

How long do groups exist?
Some could last “forever” but we really don’t encourage that.  Other groups form for a specific topic of study that might only last 4-6 months. At least every 12 months, Small Group Leaders are asked to assess if they will continue.  Generally speaking, we encourage mitosis or “cell division” where new groups spin off of existing communities.

How do I get involved?
A current listing of all groups in posted on the website and in the lobby.  If you see one that interests you, contact the leader directly. If you are trying to figure out where you best fit in or just have questions about this part of the Horizon ministry, contact Jim Stephenson or one of the elders.

Can I be a leader?
Horizon is always looking for real leaders. Contact Jim Stephenson or another elder to see how you might plug into a leadership role within an existing group or maybe even start a new one.

I don’t want to lead, but I would love to teach.  Can I do that?
Absolutely! Maybe you don’t have the time or gifts to organize and lead, but you would love to teach or even explore whether you have the gift of teaching.Contact Jim or an elder. Small groups can be a great place to discover your gifts.

Is that all there is to being in a small group?
The simple answer is “yes.” We at Horizon don’t believe that ministry has to be complicated and we also understand that schedules are complicated.  We desire every member or regular attendee at Horizon to be involved beyond church-wide activities and we believe a simple approach will promote that . . . BUT, dream a little bit about what God could do in small groups . . . imagine if . . . A group really clicked, close relationships emerged, and members started really getting into each other’s lives to hold one another accountable in their daily walk with God.

  • A group caught the vision for missions at Horizon and decided to adopt a missionary family.
  • A group found a common burden for a particular ministry or situation; and became a focused group of prayer warriors.
  • A group discovered a heart for providing an easy place to plug in for new visitors to the church.

The possibilities are endless as God works and we are open to His direction.
